This is an important introductory qualification for the sector and is frequently used as a progression route to more advanced studies. A range of topics will be covered to develop the skills to work in the thoroughbred industry, either racing or stud, while at the same time developing learners’ personal, interpersonal and workplace skills.

The content includes core modules in work experience and communications as well as a range of practical units including stable and yard routine, racehorse care and exercise, horse conformation and preparation for ridden work.

Learners who complete one or more of the new National Progression Awards (NPAs) will also be able to build towards the achievement of the full National Certificate.

Students will undertake early morning and weekend yard duties if not already gaining hands-on experience in the racing industry. An acceptable level of fitness is required to enable students to ride effectively (if riding route selected) and carry out yard duties.

This course is also suitable for individuals who would like to complete a full time training option that is not an apprenticeship.

To gain a place on the course learners should have:

  • A strong interest and knowledge of racehorses, professionally working in the thoroughbred racing industry or through either leisure and family background.
  • Physically fit and capable of carrying out the range of physical activities required for working around and riding (option depending on module choice) horses.
